Environmental Management Software for the Chemical Industry

Chemical manufacturing converts feedstocks through reactions, separations and formulation, so a change in yield, composition, heat duty or control performance can alter GHG emissions, energy use, water demand, pollutant releases and waste at the same time. The Clear Carbon™ Platform connects process, laboratory, utility, material and value-chain evidence to the plants, units, batches, substances and products that give it meaning. It preserves the distinct science of each environmental domain while unifying governance and traceability—giving chemical producers a stronger basis for compliance, assurance and decisions about process efficiency, product footprints, resource recovery and decarbonisation.

WHY | Chemical Environmental Performance Begins Inside the Process

Chemical environmental performance is created through transformation. Feedstocks become intermediates, co-products, final products, off-gases, wastewater and residual materials across reaction, conversion, separation, purification, formulation, blending, storage and loading. The same tonne of output can carry combustion emissions, process CO₂ or N₂O, purchased energy, volatile organic compounds, other air pollutants, water consumption, effluent loads, hazardous waste and upstream or downstream emissions.

Those outcomes do not move in a simple one-to-one relationship with production. They can change with conversion, yield, selectivity, product grade, feedstock composition, catalyst condition, heat integration, solvent recovery, abatement performance, start-ups, shutdowns and off-specification production. An enterprise total may show that emissions or waste increased, but not whether the cause was higher throughput, a different product slate, falling yield, abnormal venting, control-equipment downtime or a revised calculation method.

The scale and resource intensity make that missing context consequential. The International Energy Agency identifies chemicals as the largest industrial consumer of both oil and natural gas. In 2024, petrochemical feedstocks represented about 70% of the volumetric increase in global oil use. UNEP estimates that the global chemicals industry was worth US$5 trillion in 2017 and was projected to double in size by 2030.

The stakes extend beyond energy and climate. The World Health Organization estimates that exposure to selected chemicals caused 2 million deaths and 53 million disability-adjusted life-years in 2019, while cautioning that the evidence covers only a subset of chemical exposures. The Global Framework on Chemicals now sets 28 targets across the chemicals lifecycle, including reliable information on chemicals in materials and products by 2030 and data on production, use, emissions, releases and waste by 2035.

Yet the evidence needed to respond is commonly divided between DCS and SCADA historians, batch and production systems, ERP, tank inventories, LIMS, continuous monitoring, meters, maintenance records, waste manifests, suppliers and spreadsheets. Substance names, equipment tags, units, sampling periods, boundaries and estimation methods can differ across plants and jurisdictions. Manual compilation may produce a plausible total while losing the stream, batch, factor, allocation, calculation and approval history underneath it. That slows assurance and weakens the decisions that matter: where material is being lost, which process is driving a release, which product carries the hotspot and which intervention deserves investigation first.

WHAT | A Governed Environmental Model of Chemical Operations

The Clear Carbon™ Platform creates a governed environmental model of the chemical value chain—from feedstock sourcing and storage through process units, separation, formulation and packaging to distribution, customer use, recovery and disposal. It connects each environmental result to the physical operation that produced it, so teams can move from an enterprise total to the relevant plant, process, asset, stream, batch, substance, product or supplier.

This is not an attempt to collapse every impact into one score. Tonnes of CO₂e, megawatt-hours, water volumes, kilograms of individual pollutants and tonnes of waste retain their own classifications, units and scientific methods. What becomes common is the control environment around them: ownership, source evidence, mappings, boundaries, calculation rules, approvals, versions and traceability.

Clear Carbon’s specialised Solutions apply that foundation to the environmental questions chemical producers need to answer. GHG Insights™ governs direct, purchased-energy and value-chain inventories. Energy Insights™ connects electricity, fuels and steam with production and process performance. Water Insights™ structures withdrawals, internal flows, reuse, discharge and quality. Waste Insights™ tracks by-products and waste through classification, recovery, treatment and disposal. For Australian facilities, NPI Insights™ supports pollutant-release and transfer accounting.

The result is reusable environmental intelligence rather than a new workbook for every permit, inventory, disclosure, customer request or product assessment. Environment, sustainability, operations, engineering, procurement, finance and assurance teams can work from the same governed evidence while viewing it at the level appropriate to their decisions. This creates a consistent basis for comparing material, energy and emissions intensity across changing product slates.

That makes it easier to reconcile material and environmental accounts, distinguish operational changes from methodology changes, compare intensity across plants and grades, locate abnormal utility or release patterns, identify product and value-chain hotspots, and test whether proposed improvements alter both environmental performance and business outcomes. A defined Proof of Value can begin with one priority chemical-process, reporting or data challenge using the organisation’s own information and success criteria.

HOW | Connect Chemical Mass, Process and Environmental Data

Connect plant, laboratory and enterprise evidence

Carbon Sense™, Clear Carbon’s Automated Recording technology brings relevant chemical-process and environmental records into a controlled data pipeline. Depending on the customer’s integration architecture, sources can include ERP, DCS and SCADA historians, MES and batch records, LIMS, continuous emissions monitoring, tank gauges, weighbridges, production and stock records, utility meters, maintenance systems, waste manifests, logistics data, supplier submissions, APIs, structured files and controlled spreadsheets.

Configured ingestion and imports map fields, standardise units and transform source formats while retaining the original record, timestamp and evidence. This removes repeated extraction and re-keying without asking every plant system to become identical.

Model the physical relationships behind each result

Records are contextualised against legal entities, sites, plants, process units, equipment, tanks, meters, material streams, emission and discharge points, products, batches, substances, suppliers and reporting periods. Controlled mappings reconcile local equipment tags, material codes and chemical names across systems.

That structure allows related evidence to be tested together. Feedstock receipts and inventory movements can be reconciled with production, co-products, off-specification material, recovered material and waste. Utilities can be related to process units and production volumes. Laboratory concentration results can be paired with the applicable stream, flow and sampling period. Validation rules identify missing fields, duplicate records, incompatible units, gaps, unexpected ranges and failed reconciliations. Automation surfaces the exception; process and environmental specialists decide what it means.

Apply chemical-specific science and accounting

Impact Accounting™ binds every governed result to its activity data, unit, boundary, method, factor, factor version, allocation rule and effective period. Combustion and purchased-energy calculations may use standard activity-data and factor relationships. Chemical-process emissions can require direct measurement, production-based factors, stoichiometric relationships, carbon balances or gas-specific methods. The IPCC’s chemical-industry inventory guidance provides methods for processes including ammonia, nitric acid, adipic acid, caprolactam and fluorochemical production.

Pollutant releases and transfers preserve the identity of each substance and environmental medium. Depending on the source and applicable rule, quantities may come from monitoring, mass balance, emission factors or engineering calculations—the estimation families represented in the OECD’s international PRTR resources. Water accounts distinguish withdrawal, supply, process use, storage, reuse and discharge; wastewater loads connect measured concentration with flow and time. Waste accounts retain material type, hazardous classification, source, transporter, destination and recovery, treatment or disposal outcome.

Extend control beyond the plant boundary

Chemical products connect upstream feedstocks with downstream formulation, use and end-of-life pathways. Carbon Fabric™ structures requests, submissions, review and evidence exchange with suppliers, customers and internal contributors. Corporate value-chain inventories can be organised across the GHG Protocol’s 15 Scope 3 categories, while product-level work can retain raw-material, manufacturing, transport, storage, use and disposal stages consistent with the GHG Protocol Product Standard. Corporate, operational and product results remain distinguishable, with their boundaries and allocations visible.

Preserve the route from source to report

Each result can retain its source system, import record, transformation, unit conversion, methodology, factor version, supporting document, review status, approval and revision history. Emissions Prism™ uses governed accounts to produce repeatable regulatory, sustainability, customer, product and management outputs without reconstructing the underlying evidence for every cycle.

Users can follow the chain from plant or supplier evidence through calculation and environmental account to a reported value—and back again. This supports the systematic management and continual-improvement discipline of ISO 14001:2026 and strengthens evidence readiness as ISSA 5000 establishes a global baseline for sustainability assurance.

Turn governed accounts into process decisions

Once the evidence is connected, teams can analyse absolute performance and production-normalised intensity by site, unit, asset, batch, grade, substance, product or supplier. They can investigate whether a variance came from throughput, feedstock composition, yield, energy efficiency, a release event, abatement performance, waste routing or a methodology change.

Accelerating NetZero™ connects verified history with production forecasts, target pathways and proposed changes such as feedstock substitution, electrification, low-emissions hydrogen, heat recovery, process redesign or carbon capture. People can compare the consequences of different assumptions before committing capital; the technology handles the data relationships, recalculation and repetition while engineers and environmental specialists retain responsibility for judgement and action.
