The NPI reporting period is the financial year, from 1 July to 30 June. Under clause 9(7) of the NPI NEPM, the occupier must give its report to the nominated agency of the state or territory where the facility is located within three months after the end of the reporting period.
Key points
- Reporting period runs 1 July to 30 June
- Reports are due by 30 September
- Approved calendar-year reporters lodge by 31 March
- Clause 9(7) of the NPI NEPM sets the three-month deadline
- Data is published by 31 March the following year
Due dates
- Financial-year reporters: 30 September.
- Calendar-year reporters: 31 March. A jurisdiction may approve a different annual reporting period under clause 4 of the NEPM.
The annual cycle
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 July | The reporting period begins |
| 30 September | Facilities lodge reports with their state or territory agency |
| 31 December | Agencies complete their review and forward data to the Commonwealth |
| 31 March | The Australian Government publishes the data for the previous reporting year |
Useful to know
A report is published under the NPI year in which its reporting period ends. Data for part of a year is published as reported and is not scaled up. NPI and NGER deadlines differ: NGER reports go to the Clean Energy Regulator by 31 October.
What happens after lodgement
The state or territory agency reviews each report for accuracy and completeness and may query the occupier before it forwards the data to the Commonwealth by 31 December. The data is then published by 31 March.
Non-standard reporting periods
Where a jurisdiction approves a period other than the financial year, the report is placed in the NPI year in which that period ends. DCCEEW’s industry reporting FAQ explains how these periods are treated.
The dates come from the NEPM itself. Clause 19 sets 31 December for states and territories to forward data to the Commonwealth, and clause 29 sets 31 March for publication.
Why it matters
The NPI deadline falls a month before the NGER deadline, so facilities that report under both schemes should finalise fuel, energy and production records early enough to meet both. If a report will be late, contact the state or territory NPI office before the deadline.
